Layer 1: Application-Level Authenticated Encryption (AES-256-GCM)#

The baseline requirement of any secure vault is robust symmetric encryption. However, standard AES encryption (such as AES-CBC) provides only confidentiality; it does not protect against subtle data tampering.

Meridian implements AES-256-GCM (Galois/Counter Mode), an authenticated encryption standard deployed by intelligence agencies and cryptographic researchers:

  1. Confidentiality: Every clinical reading, extracted analyte, original document, and cached thumbnail is transformed into cryptographically pseudorandom ciphertext before touching physical flash storage.
  2. Integrity and Authenticity (Anti-Tampering): AES-GCM generates a 128-bit Message Authentication Code (MAC) tag alongside the ciphertext. If an attacker, corrupted flash sector, or rogue process attempts to alter even a single bit (such as modifying an ApoB reading from 80 to 180 mg/dL), the MAC validation check fails immediately, and the compromised payload is rejected.

Layer 2: Hardware-Bound Key Management (Apple Secure Enclave)#

An encryption algorithm is only as resilient as the security of its master key. If an app stores its decryption keys in an unencrypted property list or transmits them to a cloud server, the encryption is easily bypassed.

Meridian generates master 256-bit symmetric keys directly on the device using cryptographically secure hardware random number generators (RNG) and locks them inside the iOS Hardware Keychain under the strictest hardware-bound access control constraint available in Apple silicon (ensuring keys are accessible strictly on this specific physical device when unlocked).

The Architectural Guarantee of the Secure Enclave#

  • Physical Silicon Isolation: The Secure Enclave is a dedicated hardware coprocessor fabricated on the Apple SoC, physically isolated from the main application CPU.
  • Device Fusion: The device-bound hardware constraint guarantees that the master encryption key cannot be exported, migrated to another phone, or synced across iCloud backups. The key is physically fused to that single iPhone.

Layer 3: OS Kernel Hardware Data Protection (Class-A Complete Protection)#

Physical theft of mobile hardware represents a major threat vector for personal health records. If an attacker steals an iPhone, they might attempt a "chip-off" attack (physically desoldering the NAND flash chips to read their raw contents with specialized forensic hardware).

To defeat physical forensics, Meridian enforces Class-A Complete File Protection across all clinical directories and database tables.

How Class-A Protection Operates at the Kernel Level#

  • When the user locks their iPhone screen, the iOS kernel mathematically purges the file system decryption keys from volatile RAM memory.
  • Until the user authenticates with Face ID, Touch ID, or their device passcode, the decrypted data does not exist anywhere in device memory. Even under liquid-nitrogen memory freezing or chip-off forensic analysis, the data remains unreadable.

Layer 4: Backup Quarantine and Cloud Isolation#

When users plug their iPhones into desktop computers or corporate laptops to charge, operating systems often initiate automated background backups via Finder or iTunes. Unencrypted local backups can inadvertently create plaintext images of application storage.

Meridian eliminates secondary exposure by tagging all database paths, cropped scans, and laboratory reports with explicit backup exclusion flags. This prevents background backup daemons and cloud snapshot routines from extracting medical files into unencrypted disk images.


Runtime Privacy: Active Shielding During Live Usage#

Security must extend beyond static storage into active user sessions. Meridian incorporates dynamic runtime shields to protect confidential health metrics in public spaces and shared environments.

1. 100% On-Device Neural Vision (Apple Vision Framework)#

Traditional lab trackers upload photos of blood reports to cloud APIs (such as AWS Textract or OpenAI) for optical character recognition. Meridian performs the entire optical extraction locally using Apple's Vision framework and on-device machine learning models. Your blood test goes directly from your camera sensor to local memory, never transmitting a single network packet across the internet.

2. Screen-Recording and AirPlay Blackout Shield#
