The Triglyceride-to-HDL Ratio: Unmasking Small Dense LDL#

Standard lipid panels measure the total weight of cholesterol inside LDL particles, but they do not reveal whether your LDL particles are large and buoyant (less harmful) or small, dense, and oxidized (highly atherogenic):

Non-HDL Cholesterol: The Overlooked Metric#

If your lab report does not measure advanced apolipoproteins, look at your Non-HDL Cholesterol:

  • Why It Matters: Non-HDL cholesterol captures the combined cholesterol content of all atherogenic particles (LDL, VLDL, IDL, and Lipoprotein(a)).
  • Longevity Target: Target a Non-HDL Cholesterol < 90 to 100 mg/dL (conventional guidelines accept < 130 mg/dL).
Why Very High HDL (> 90 mg/dL) Is Not Always Protective

While moderate HDL (50–70 mg/dL) is protective, genetically or pathologically elevated HDL (> 90–100 mg/dL) often represents dysfunctional HDL that has lost its anti-inflammatory and reverse-transport capabilities.
