Is Hemoglobin the Same as Hemoglobin A1c?#

  • Regular Hemoglobin (Hgb): An iron-rich protein inside your red blood cells whose job is to carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. If your hemoglobin is too low, you may have anemia and feel exhausted.
  • Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c): The percentage of that hemoglobin that has bonded with glucose (sugar) floating in your bloodstream. When blood sugar is chronically high, more sugar permanently attaches to hemoglobin molecules in a process called glycation.

Because red blood cells live in your body for approximately 3 to 4 months before being recycled by your spleen, measuring the "sugar coating" on these cells gives your doctor an accurate average of your blood sugar over the last 90 to 120 days.

  • The Formula: eAG (in mg/dL) = (28.7 × A1c) - 46.7

  • 5.0% A1c: Average blood sugar of 97 mg/dL.
  • 5.5% A1c: Average blood sugar of 111 mg/dL.

3 Hidden Factors That Can Skew Your A1c Result#

While HbA1c is the gold standard for long-term glucose tracking, certain non-diabetic conditions can alter red blood cell turnover and artificially raise or lower your number:

  1. Iron Deficiency Anemia: When your body lacks iron, red blood cells live slightly longer than normal before being replaced. This gives them more time to accumulate sugar, which can artificially raise your A1c score.
