Heme oxygenase converts heme to biliverdin, which biliverdin reductase reduces to unconjugated bilirubin. Bilirubin is transported by albumin to hepatocytes and glucuronidated by UGT1A1 for biliary secretion.

Synthesis rates of carrier proteins depend directly on ribosomal transcription and functional hepatic mass.
