Synthesized endogenously via the mevalonate pathway sharing HMG-CoA reductase with cholesterol. Reduced ubiquinol serves as a powerful lipid-soluble antioxidant protecting cellular membranes and LDL particles from peroxidation.

Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone) (CoQ10) functions as an indispensable enzymatic cofactor, antioxidant substrate, or nuclear transcription factor ligand. Cellular utilization depends upon intestinal active transport proteins, carrier-mediated plasma transport, and intracellular phosphorylation or conversion into active coenzyme forms. Inadequate tissue concentrations impair mitochondrial ATP generation, DNA repair mechanisms, neurotransmitter synthesis, and genomic methylation.
Longevity Risk Architecture & Epidemiology
Statin therapy inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, predictably depleting circulating and muscular CoQ10 by 30-50%, predisposing to statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS).

Pre-Analytical Considerations:

Standard 10 to 12 hour overnight fast is recommended; avoid high-dose vitamin and mineral supplements for 24 hours prior to blood draw.
